Cycles
Singing songs and thinking long and reading books sometimes
Loving some no special one and reading all the signs
Water flows and so I go to where I’m meant to be
Reflecting sky not asking why just learning to be me
And trying to be free sometimes won’t work at all
Like green leaves trying to be red when it is fall
Worried heads and empty beds and wanting something more
Crying some defying some behind our own closed doors
Fearing love but needing love no one really knows
The other ones who need someone but cannot let it show
And trying to be free sometimes won’t work at all
Like green leaves trying to be red when it is Fall
Peace at last in gentle grass warming from the sun
Watching flies it makes me high to think that we are one
On saddened days the misty haze throws veils on what is real
The morning light that wakens night is what I want to feel
And trying to be free sometimes won’t work at all
Like green leaves trying to be red when it is fall

Only Then

Only Then
If the trees refused to grow
Then my darling you would know
And if the sun refused to shine
Then you’d know that you’re not mine
Then and only then could I leave you here behind
Then and only then could I could I say that you’re not mine
When the need for peace is no longer felt
When our love is finally put to rest
And the day the icy hearts all melt
And you tell me that it’s for the best
When the sands are cracked and strained with time
When you no longer have a need for me
And the stones are crushed in love’s sweet wine
Only then could I set you free
Only then could I set you free
Only then could I set you free
Then and only then could I leave you here behind
Then and only then could I could I say that you’re not mine
Then and only then could I leave you here behind
Then and only then could I could I say that you’re not mine

Song of Loretta
It was on a summer’s day
When I first saw my one
Her face was bright eyes dark as night
While standing in the sun
I thought I loved her
I thought I knew
And it was in the twilight year
When autumn leaves did turn
She came to me and set me free
And I began to learn
I learned to love her
I learned and knew
A year has come and gone away
Since she came into my heart
And from that day to me she’ll stay
God’s finest work of art
I know I love her
God knows I do
I know I love her
God knows I do

Little Honda Susie

Little Honda Susie
Little Honda Susie
Little dime store floozy
Where have you gone?
Why didn’t you choose me?
Little Honda Susie
Where have you gone?
Did something go wrong
To make you choose that bike over me?
I waited so long
For the love that she promised but she
Gave to her bike instead of me
Ahh…
Look at Honda Susie tearing up the road
The concrete is a straining with that heavy load
Honda 750 has her on its back
Drinkin' and a guzzlin' bud by the six-pack
Now go, go little Susie go
Can’t you hear her rumbler moving down the street?
Here she comes a ridin’ better move your feet
Look at the smoke smell the burnin’ skin
She used to make the jacket that she’s riding in
Oh go, go little Susie go
And if you never come back I’ll be so happy
One day little Susie finally met her match
A Harley 1200 she just could not catch
She tried to beat that hog with all of her might
She ran and ran and ran and then blew up in the night
Oh go, go little Susie go
And if you never come back I’ll be so…
Little Honda Susie
Why didn’t you choose me?
Where have you gone?

My One

My One
Once was a time when I held my head high
And long ago there were birds in the sky
But now you’re gone
Just like the sun from the sky
Now you’re gone
I am alone and I cry my one
You were the thought that my mind would always save
My heart was filled with the joy that you gave
But still you’re gone
Just like the dew from the dawn
Still you’re gone
And I just can’t go on my one
Someday in time I’ll be happy to be
Alone and on my own contended and free
Till then you’re gone
Just like all the leaves from the trees
Till then you’re gone
Like all the water from the seas my one

For the Unknown Soldier
I would watch him playing in the sand
Building castles and allowing the sea to reclaim them
And it seemed altogether fitting they be returned from whence they came
He was always pretty quiet
One of those people you never seem to notice until you miss him
And then he’s gone
But soon came his time and he along with thousands of others
Left to fight for what he was told he believed in
I waited for mail but received none until a telegram came
Dear Sir: “we are so sorry to inform you…”
He was laid away quietly
No sun no wind no sound
Just a gray stillness and a faint echo resounding
It seems altogether fitting they be returned from whence they came
Vietnam Lullaby
Vietnam, napalm, lullaby my little child to sleep
Vietnam, rain is gone, lullaby my little child to sleep
Panthers fight in the night give my child such a fright
Weathermen bombing homes terror as he’s never known
Don’t you worry little son Daddy’s here with his gun
There's a war I don’t care no more just protect you and your mom
Life is now sad and gray why must we end this way?
Vietnam, napalm, lullaby my baby child to sleep
Washington bombed upon lullaby my little child to sleep
Here’s for the Birchers they’re gonna get your soul
Klansmen want the black men there gonna put them in a hole
Legionnaires breaking chairs on the heads of longhairs
Communists couldn’t miss bomb North Carolina
Vietnam, the whole world’s gone, now my little child’s asleep

In Waiting

In Waiting
In a winter’s waning hour after the death of spring
I came around to a wild menagerie of reflective rings, retrospective sounds
Looking in shops for nothing to buy - can’t find it there and I don’t know why
And I know that I am frightened
And I know that I am lost
In the NY Daily News was a picture man, his face was you
I grasped the fluid breeze with my trembling hands, it was the breath of you
The toothpaste I bought held no answers for me
Why can’t I love now that you’ve ceased to be?
And I know that I am frightened
And I know that I am lost
Your life goes on without me
I know that I am lost
My soul has turned to ashes in the blinding sun
My blind eyes flow with the tears from the advice that made my song unsung
This store is closed
When will I ever be freed of this bond?
Why cant I live again can’t I go on?
And I know that I am frightened
And I know that I am lost
Your life goes on without me
And I know what I have lost
And I know that I am lost
And I know that I am lost
And I know that I am lost
And I know that I am lost…

The Seedling

The Seedling
Soft sadness creeps into my eyes
My brain can't figure out just why
With truth, the ghost inside me cries
I cannot hear the answer
I loved a good man yesterday
He said he had to go away
I didn't ask him please to stay
I know about flying
When will it come, Lord?
When will it come?
I'll wait until the waiting's done
But Lord, when will it come?
The river whispered what was good
I'd hold it's wisdom if I could
But it left me like I knew it would
And flows where I can't find it
When will it come, Lord?
When will it come?
I'll wait until the waiting's done
But Lord, when will it come?
The pavement gave way to a weed
That blossomed from a wayward seed
Sweet beauty, do you feel my need?
To know your simple secret?
When will it come, Lord?
When will it come?
I'll wait until the waiting's done
But Lord, when will it come?

In the Evening

In the Evening
With a rhythm like the sounds of the first new moon
And a lyric that’s as sweet as night’s perfume
He sits with foot a’ tapping
His old guitar the stars shine on
Sounds like an accordion when he decides to play a lively French tune
But when he plays a Gaelic song
I swear I hear the bagpipes rolling on
Why can’t he see me hiding in the evening?
I wish he could hear me singing along with him
Like this…
Watching how he stops, with a blue candle flame
Burning in his eyes, he sings life’s game
With music and symbols a’ shining
Reaching out to touch the dawn
Waiting to break night’s stifled yawn
What if he knew why I linger on?
But when he plays his evening sounds, I hope I’ll find what he has found
Why can’t he see me hiding in the evening?
I wish he could hear me singing along with him
Like this…
Why can’t he see me hiding in the evening?
I wish he could hear me singing along with him
Like this…
